WILLMANN, MICHAEL
1630 Königsberg - 1706 Leubus

Title: David with the Head of Goliath.
Technique: Pen, brush, and wash on paper.
Mounting: Mounted. Measurement: 30,5 x
19cm. Literature:
E. Kloss: Michael Willmann, Leben und Werke eines deutschen Barockmalers, Breslau 1934; there in catalogue of drawings: B.I. Lavierte Federzeichnung, 30,6 x 19,6 cm, then owned by Heinrich Boß, Berlin.

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

We are grateful to Rüdiger Grimkowski, Berlin, for confirming the attribution of the present drawing on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.

In his e-mail of September 2019, Grimkowski writes: "The drawing shows characteristics
that Willmann retained in all his creative periods, in addition to the flowing forms of the musculature, details such as the formation of the feet and hands. The drawing can be integrated into Willmann's well-known oeuvre: it is a design drawing for the painting of the same name, which was formerly in the Palais Nostiz in Prague; today it is in the possession of the Prague National Gallery.".
