Title: Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Measurement: 50 x 40cm.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Private ownership, Germany.

Shown here is Catherine of Alexandria, one of the Catholic Church's most famous saints, wrapped in a red cloak. She was considered a symbol of integrity and faith, inspiring numerous artists from the Middle Ages to Modernity. In her hands she holds the instrument of torture of her martyrdom, the wheel lined with saws and nails, and the instrument of her death, the sword. She is represented very naturalistically. It seems as if the artist captured a moment of everyday life and portrayed a woman of his time, looking out of the canvas with a fragile yet proud gaze. So far, the creator of the work remains unknown, however there are clues in the stylistic elements, such as the unembellished realism and the accentuated contrast between light and dark. It can be assumed that it was made by an artist working in Rome in the second decade of the seventeenth century, who took Michelangelo Merisi's works as his model. Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, was a leading artist of the Italian early baroque period.
