Carlo Bugatti's unconventional, almost sculptural objects borrow from both natural and cultural contexts in their use of a wide variety of materials. Bugatti's exploration of Japanese aesthetics, Islamic and North African art, which is accompanied by a basic interest in nature inherent in Art Nouveau, is particularly noteworthy. The design presented here is not only reflected in the sheer combination of the materials as unconventional, including the use of oak wood for the comparatively dainty, though fortified, framing seems unusual, since it is usually reserved for the production of more massive pieces of furniture. Bugatti, who moved to Paris in 1904, made this design in Milan.
