Rigaud, Hyacinthe
1659 Perpignan - 1743 Paris
- workshop
Portrait of Eberhard Jabach (1618-1695). Oil on canvas. Relined. 46.5 x 38cm. Framed.
Certificate:
Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin October 2018.
Literature:
Perreau, Stéphane: Hycinthe Rigaud. Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre, www.hyacinthe-rigaud.com no. P 128/11.
A businessman from Cologne, banker and especially art collector - this is how Eberhard IV. Jabach is presented on the painting shown here. Börsch-Supan describes the extraordinary depiction with the opened shirt collar and slightly untidy arrangement of the folds as "machtbewusste Jovialität" ("power-conscious joviality"), which reflects the impression Jabach made on his contemporaries.
Grown up in wealthy circumstances in Cologne, he is quickly driven to London and Paris, where he finally settles permanently and socialises in the important circles. His extensive art collections - a total of several hundreds of paintings and thousands of hand drawings - constituted an important pillar of today's Louvre.
Condition:
Clean painting surface with visible carcquelée, but without colour breaks.
Slight rubbing in the upper, glazing layers of paint (e.g. in the shadows of the left half of the face or in the hairs).
Glazing retouching in the dark areas of the painting, mainly in the background and the hairs, selectively also in the area of the eyes.
