1863 Tettenweis - 1928 Tetschen

Title: Serpent Dancer.
Technique: Bronze relief.
Height: 61 x 98cm.

Literature:
Cf.: T. Raff: "Die Kraft des Mannes und die weiche Schmiegsamkeit des Weibes" Franz von Stuck: Das plastische Werk. Exhibition catalogue Franz von Stuck Geburtshaus Tettenweis, July 2011 - June 2013, p. 38ff.

Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.

Franz von Stuck's probably most famous relief "Serpentinentänzerinnen" was realised in
tandem with his plans for his Munich artist's villa. It was reproduced as a bronze and
plaster relief in numerous versions. As work on the residence progressed, the artist created a colour plaster edition for the music salon. A further bronze relief was made for the garden wall. Several more works were executed for private rooms and salons (e.g. for Otto Eckmanns' music salon). "Mit dem Relief beginnen die Bestrebungen Stucks nicht nur Innenräume sondern ebenso Fassaden und Gärten dekorativ zu gestalten." ("Stuck's efforts to decorate not only interiors but also facades and gardens began with the relief.") (ex. cat. Galerie der Stadt Aschaffenburg, Aschaffenburg 1994, p. 118). A pair of dancing girls is depicted in the dynamic flow of the lines. With its ornamental application and clear elements from the Art Nouveau the figures seem inspired by the American dancer Loie Fuller. In the solo program of her celebrated European tour she performed "Serpentine" in woollen veils. Her veils resp. serpent dance inspired poets and composers as well as painters and sculptors (f.e. Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Meunier and Pierre Roche) who were amazed by her. Further works with similar subjects point to Struck probably having seen seeing Loie Fuller's veil dance or at least depictions and posters.
