RARE IRON COMBINATION TOOL.
Probably Nuremberg.
Date: End 16th c.
Technique: Iron forged and engraved.
Description: The two-part tool is equipped with a hammer and a nail puller at the top of the head, which together form a pair of pincers.
Below this are the angled, slightly conical legs with a strongly profiled, capital-like base, ending in a nail puller or a small anvil at the bottom. Both parts are held together by a cut screw and a large wing nut with bird heads. The tool is decorated with engraved tendrils.
Measurement: 21x12x5,5cm.
Provenance:
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. On loan to the Deutschen Schloss- und Beschlägemuseum Velbert from 2011 to 2025.
Literature:
Exhib. cat.: Preziosen der Handwerkskunst. Ein Raritätenkabinett edler Arbeitsgeräte aus der Sammlung Luigi Nessi, Lugano, Museum der Kulturen Basel, 2002, Basel 2002. A very similar combination tool is described and illustrated on p. 36, no. 1.
By loosening the large screw, the hammer and the nail puller could be used separately. For example, the small anvil at the end of one part could serve as a work surface for the hammer head of the other part.
