A PAIR OF MALE ANANTOMIC MODELS, HALF SKINNED.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Maker/Designer: Jules Talrich (1826-1904).
Technique: Plaster, modelled and painted.
Description: Each showing a man lying on his back resp. on his front, half skinned. These anatomical
models are unusual in that they show portraits of the manufacturer himself, i.e. Jules
Talrich, who represented himself here. Whether this was a macabre idea or a personal
memento mori remains open.
Measurement: L.ca. 96cm, w.ca. 40cm, h.ca 14cm.
Mark: On a bronze plate: Jules Talrich. Modeleur d'anatomic Faculté le Medecine Paris. Boulevard St. Germaine, 97.
Condition B/C. Base plate broken, partly restored and repainted.
Talrich was a well-known French anatomist, sculptor and keroplast. He became famous through a series of four life-size plaster casts, which were shown at the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris. The present pair shows two of these models in a smaller version
