A VICTORIAN SCOTTISH SILVER-MOUNTED RAM'S HEAD TABLE SNUFF-MULL.

Date: Middle 19th c.
Technique: Ram's head, box and tools made of silver, glass eyes, three small rolls below.
Description: Head of a ram with a centrally mounted round snuffbox made of gilded metal with a hinged
lid made of repussé silver with thistles and an unoccupied centre, five different
snufftools hanging from silver chains. Both horns tipped with silver ends, on the forehead
a plaque with an engraved coat of arms. Below on three rollers.
Measurement: B.44,5cm.
Mark: On the forehead a coat of arms: Edinburgh. 1884 (?). David Crichton Rait (from 1843).
Condition C/D. Fur partly torn and loose.
Enclosed: Skull of a Jacob's sheep/fourhorn sheep (Ovis ammon f. aries). H.34cm.


Sheeps heads's with snuffboxes were placed on the table in Scotland to offer a prize to
welcome guests.
