ANCESTOR SKULL NDAMBIRKUS.
Date: Papua New Guinea. Asmat. 19th-20th c.
Technique: Skull. Lower jaw kept in place by plant fibres. Residue of red pigment. Surface polished by use.
Measurement: 19x18x12cm.
Condition B/C. Enclosed: On a base.
Ancestor skulls are a part of daily life in the Asmat culture. Sometimes they were partly
worn around the neck on a string and men carried the skulls with them to stay in contact
with the ancestors. When sleeping the skulls were used as head rest.
