PERUZZINI, ANTONIO FRANCESCO
ca. 1643 Ancona - 1724 Milan
Title: Landscape with Figural Staffage.
The painting was created in collaboration with an unknown figure painter.
Date: Ca. 1698-1702.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 91 x 118,5cm.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Provenance:
Collection Arthur Maier, Karlsbad, before 1925 (as Alessandro Magnasco);
Auction Lempertz, Cologne, 30.11.1939 , no. 30 as Magnasco;
Private ownership, Germany.
The consigner and the community of heirs of Marianne Matella have come to an agreement regarding possible restitution claims. On the part of the community of heirs after Marianne Matella, no further claims will be asserted with regarding the present work.
The present landscape with figural staffage is the result of the collaboration between Antonio Francesco Peruzzini, who realised the landscape, and an unspecified collaborator, who added the figures to it.
Peruzzini is considered one of the protagonists of landscape painting in the 17th and 18th centuries. Starting from an approach influenced by Salvator Rosa, he achieved a free interpretation of the sense of movement and colour typical of the Rococo, using lighter shades and loosening up the ductus.
Peruzzini is known to have collaborated with important artistic personalities of his time such as Alessandro Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci, but also with painters who have not yet been identified.
We are grateful to Fausta Franchini Guelfi, Genoa, and Laura Muti, Florence, for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
