GAUL, AUGUST
1869 Großauheim - 1921 Berlin
Titel: Zwei Rehe.
Date: Ca. 1918 (Designs).
Measurement: a) Schreitendes Reh. 32 x 36,5 x 8cm. b) Sicherndes Reh. 32 x 33 x 10cm.
Technique: Each: Bronze, patinated dark brown.
Notation: Inscribed behind the right hind leg: A. GAUL. Numbered on one of the plinth sides: VI.
Of these deer sculptures two purchases each and sales from 1920/1921 in the Galerie Cassirer are known. IN 1922, the gallery took on an edition of 10 posthumous casts. Presumably there are barely any casts of more recent date. Both deer sculptures are based on the design models for Gaul's Walter-Leistikow-Memorial from 1913 (cf. cat. rais. Gabler, nos. 188-190). In contrast to those models, the surface of our sculptures is smoothed and the shapes are ruffled.
Provenance:
- Private collection North Germany
Literature:
- Gabler, Josephine: August Gaul - Das Werkverzeichnis der Skulpturen, Berlin 2007, a) Cat. rais. no. 266, b) Cat. rais. no. 267, ill.
