NERONI, BARTOLOMEO
('Riccio')
1505 ca. ? - 1571 Siena

attributed
Title: Cupid on a Shell Shaped Wagon.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 19 x 24,5cm.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Italy.

The Sienese Bartolomeo Neroni (also known as "Il Riccio") was a versatile architect, sculptor, illustrator and painter and was active in the first half of the 16th century. After receiving his training in the Sodoma workshop, he followed the mannerism of Domenico Beccafumi.
In the present painting, painted on wood, which was probably part of an extensive decoration, Riccio combines with irony and skill his preference for motifs from antiquity (playing putti, sea monsters and shells) with the gentle painting style of Sodoma and the works of the classical painters.
The figures are reminiscent of the long Sienese tradition, in particular they recall Beccafumi.
