REIFFENSTEIN, CARL THEODOR
Frankfurt 1820 - 1893
Title: Wide Landscape with Ideal Rhenish Castle.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Measurement: 45,5 x 36cm
Notation: Signed and dated lower right: Carl Reiffenstein / Mai 58.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Provenancen:
Private ownership, Germany.
The castle rises dramatically in the setting sun. While the entrance is invitingly illuminated by the last rays of the sun, the tower is already disappearing into the night.
Born in Frankfurt am Main, Carl Theodor Reiffenstein first studied architecture and later painting at the renowned Städlschule. His paintings are still regarded today as meticulous inventories of a world in flux. In doing so, he concentrated - as in the present painting - primarily on medieval architecture. Even today, his work is regarded as a central source of information for the Frankfurt cityscape of the 19th century, which was already undergoing structural change around 1850. But Reiffenstein's pictures go far beyond the documentary. As a reaction to the industrial revolution, his motifs express his attachment to nature and an idealised past in the tradition of Romanticism. It is not for nothing that Carl Theodor Reiffenstein is also called the painting poet because of his atmospheric landscape and city pictures.
