The works of important female artists from Germany and abroad represent a focal point of the Olbricht Collection. This also includes several works by Cindy Sherman. Created in different phases of her work, they provide a wonderful overview of the American artist's oeuvre. The photograph presented here dates from the year 2000 and is assigned to the series of "Hollywood/Hampton Types", because the two places stand for the jetset of beautiful people. In this work, Sherman remains true to her leitmotif and embodies a female stereotype: coquettish and self-confident, her "figure" looks into the camera. She is photographed frontally above the belly, imitating a pose of models or actresses for set cards. It is not only the image of an aging woman that disappoints expectations of such a portrayal. The thickly applied make-up cannot be overlooked, nor the wig, the crooked teeth and the breast prosthesis. The display of the masquerade exposes the role pattern, exaggerates it and lets it become a caricature of itself. The shattered American dream is impressively symbolized here, as in the other works in the series created between 2000 and 2002.
