DUTCH SCHOOL
17th C.
Title: Allegory of Winter.
Technique: Oil on wood.
Measurement: 23 x 30,5cm.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
The present painting is inspired by some paintings by Jacopo Bassano or his workshop with allegories of the winter months or seasons. The two figures on the right, warming themselves by the fire, are the hallmark of Bassano's workshop. The artist probably took a print as a starting point, to which he added typically Nordic elements and themes, such as the still life with fish at the bottom centre.
