From 1867, the Düsseldorf painter Emil Volkers undertook a study trip to Romania at the invitation of the Romanian Prince Carol I. He also lived in Bucharest until 1880. Volkers also had a residence in Bucharest until 1880. During his longer stays in Romania, he created these genre scenes of Romanian country life.
