Emanuel Schmutzer designed the model of this jardinière in 1898 for the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin. In 1900, it was presented to the public at the Paris World Exhibition.
The powerful imagery - together with the tonal colourfulness of the masterfully executed glazing technique - is an impressive testimony to the design language of Art Nouveau and casts a spell over its observer.
This rare model only appears on the art market from time to time. One example of this model belongs to the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
