In Ewald Matarés Oeuvre the watercolours - about 227 are preserved - "only" occupies a modest place. Nevertheless, the artist views them inseperablely connected to his suplutures and woodcuts. Even though he once described his watercolours as studies, he keeps them like a trasure and seperates himself only occasionally from individual sheets.
As shown in both examples Mataré repeatedly paints cows which he places them in natural contexts infront of dunes. The extremely reduced forms and strictly interwining forms are reminiscent of his sculptures. This way Mataré's watercolours also evolve from observations of nature. Here, he follows his conviction of the order of the ornaments which conceal nature's law. All sensations underlie the ornament. It is the external expression, inner suspense and movemnet. Mataré simply wants to tell this but not illustrate it - his works are always outside of time.
