1957 Guáimaro/Kuba
Title: Untitled (for Parkett 39).
Date: 1994.
Technique: Silkscreen on 8 individual sheets of coated Appleton paper.
Depiction Size: 317,5 x 691cm.
Notation: . Signed and numbered on enclosed certificate.
Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher).
Number: 1/84.
Condition:
Sheets wavy and with occasional creases (due to former packaging). Edges partially bumped and slightly torn. Verso with slight traces of paint (due to the manufacturing process).
With enclosed certificate. With Parkett magazine.
A copy of the installation instructions is enclosed. The artist explicitly states here that the edition is designed to be installed indoors or outdoors and that the work is not complete until it has been installed accordingly. However, if parts are missing or the work needs to be trimmed appropriately for the installation location, this would still be in the interest of the artist. He also points out imperfections inherent in the work or caused by the production process and confirms that, due to the format, bubbles or wrinkles can occur during installation and that the artist accepts this as inherent in the work. Smaller tears disappear as soon as the billboard is fixed to the wall.
"Gonzalez-Torres finds and mobilizes materials which may function as analogues for experience and emotions which are not 'explained' in any extended biographical supplementary exegesis. They are works about love, desire, loss, death, and mourning, and much of their extraordinary power derives from the artist's refusal to retreat into didacticism."
Simon Watney, Parkett no. 39, 1994.
Article on the work and artist from Parkett edition no. 39.
Felix Gonzalez-Torres is one of the most important representatives of conceptual American art of the 80s and 90s. The artist's estate is represented by David Zwirner.
