Technique: Bronze, patinated in gold. Grey marble pedestal.
Measurement: Height incl. pedestal 81,5cm.
Mark: On pedestal inscribed "Fonderia Sommer Napoli".
This statue of Perseus comes from the workshop of Giorgio Sommer, who was born in
Frankfurt am Main. He settled in Naples in 1857, initially with a photographic studio.
From the 1870s onward he opened a workshop there in which he replicated ancient works of
art in bronze and terracotta. His works were widely distributed in the 19th century. The
original that served as a model for this figure dates from Hellenistic times and was found
in Pompeii. It is now in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli.
