SKARBINA, FRANZ
Berlin 1849 - 1910
Title: Girl at the Garden Window.
Technique: Oil on card.
Measurement: 36,5 x 48,5cm.
Estate stamp lower right.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
Franz Skarabina was a German Impressionist painter. His works were characterised in particular by his pronounced sense of reality. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and numerous journeys took him through Germany and all of Europe. He developed his style quickly, so that his paintings became more and more popular and he became a full professor at the Berlin Academy, where he himself studied.
In 1892 he founded the group Elf with Max Liebermann, among others, and in 1898 he was a co-founder of the Berlin Secession. The artist's estate was burnt during the Second World War, and the surviving works are now in collections internationally and in the holdings of many German museums.
The present painting shows a wildly planted garden with a setting sun in the background. A little girl dressed in a dress is standing in front of the closed window of a house whose façade flanks the edge of the painting. The late summer, idyllic atmosphere emanating from the scene invites us to linger and dream.
