STUCK, FRANZ VON
1863 Tettenweis - 1928 Tetschen
Title: Riding Amazon.
Date: Design 1897, cast after 1905.
Technique: Bronze, black patinated.
Height: with bronze base: 65cm.
Notation: Inscribed in front of the plinth: Franz von Stuck.
Foundry Mark: Lateral on the top edge of the base Foundry drawing: Guss C. Leyrer Munich.
Frame/Pedestal: On original wooden base (108cm).
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
Powerfully, the warrior on her horse holds a lance in her right hand and is about to hurl it forward. Except for the helmet with its antique references to the Athena bust in the Munich Glyptothek, the woman is depicted naked - yet the female figure is not focused on the erotic aspect, but rather on the athleticism, dynamism, pride and also the power of the Amazon vis-à-vis the horse, which follows her command and bends its head to the side.
The perfectly balanced composition of the bronze, with its detailed but not manneristically exaggerated muscular play, the smooth surface with the finely chiselled hair and ornaments of the helmet, and the dark patina, is one of the most successful works of the Munich painter Franz von Stuck. It stands at the beginning of the development towards Art Nouveau and refers to ancient traditions with the helmet of Athena. Here Stuck combines two mythological traditions in one object: a female fighter from the army of warrior women of the legendary people of the Amazons wears the helmet of Athena, the protector of the arts, which Stuck himself had previously established as the signet of Munich as a city of art. First cast in 1897, a life-size copy of this statue later also forms an important part of the artistic concept of his villa in Bogenhausen.
Franz von Stuck in particular, who along with Franz von Lenbach is one of the formative Munich artistic personalities of the time, shows here his comprehensive talent, which goes far beyond painting and draughtsmanship. Since 1936, there has been a monumental version of his "Amazone" in front of the portico of the villa.
