Between 1889 and 1901 Kallmorgen spent summers with his family in his house in Grotzingen. It was not until he moved to Berlin that these stays became less frequent, but the house with its large garden remained an important anchor point for the painter.
Through the large number of oil studies and paintings whose subjects he found there, Kallmorgen became a chronicler of the place. The depiction here shows the nightly fire in the community barn - and the desperate attempt of the villagers to fight the force of the fire.
