George Clarkson Stanfield allows us an insight into one of his experiences during a trip through Germany. He depicts the multifaceted landscape of the Rhine, over which the 12th-century Marksburg Castle regally rests and watches. His paintings captivate the viewer with a practised mastery of the art of composition and an unerring sense for the "pleasant" and "picturesque" in subject and effect. The painting is a testimony to the great attraction that the Rhineland exuded as a holiday and leisure destination as early as the 19th century. The meandering lines that the Rhine gave to the fertile landscape convey the magic and power of nature. The numerous medieval castles and palaces testify to the appeal of this fairytale place over several centuries.
