GREAT SILK YUZEN BIRODO WITH SEA BATTLE.
Origin: Japan.
Dynasty: Late Meiji period.
Date: Ca. 1900.
Technique: Silk velvet partially shorn and coloured in muted tones. Stretched on a wooden frame and backed with paper.
Description: In front of a grey-toned sky, a turbulent sea with whipping waves. On the left half of the
picture several large warships with warriors in elaborate armour fighting against the,
partly shipwrecked, opponents.
Measurement: 134,5x124,5cm.
Some tissue fractures in the lower area.
Provenance:
- Estate of Max Ernst.
- Dorothea Tanning, since then in family possession.
This impressive work is made using the yuzen technique, in which velvet is coloured and the pile is carefully cut away in places. This creates a painterly, three-dimensional effect of light and shadow with great vibrancy.
