IMPORTANT CEREMONIAL SPIKED MACE (GRUZ).

Origin: India, Maratha or Persia.
Technique: Iron with gold inlay (koftgari).
Description: Near spherical head fitted with tall central spike and 14 smaller spikes around the circumference. Both sphere halfs decorated with leaf scrolls, stars and an inscription from the Quran: Bismillâhirrahmânirrahim, fe-lâ ghâliba-lekum in yansurukumullâhu - If God should aid you, no one can overcome you. The staff with parallel lines spiraling, the handle with dense foliage.
Measurement: Length 78.5cm.

Condition:
Good condition with traces of use and age.
Iron with dark and fine rust patina.
Very few of the gold inlay lost.

Compare:
The Wallace Collection, London. No. 2328, a similar weapon, dated to the 18th c.
