Provenance:
Private ownership, Italy.
The present painting is based on a print by the engraver Agostino Carracci from 1590-1595, which depicts Venus or Galatea with two Erots sitting in a chariot pulled by dolphins. The work shows some significant variations compared to the print: the third putto on the right, leaning against the body of the protagonist, is missing, the sea with its waves takes up more space and the cloth, which serves as a sail, is depicted differently. This speaks for a composition that is original in its own way, created by an Italian artist with a typical neoclassical taste.
