Jaques Callot cannot only be considered a master of his craft, but he also perfected the technique of etching, thus influencing subsequent generations enormously. As a court painter, he earned his daily bread by making portraits and documenting life at court and among the people, so his works have become vivid narratives of his time. In addition, he also produced detailed landscape drawings. To this day, however, Callot is best known for his series "Les Misères Et Les Mal-Heurs De La Guerre" from 1633, offered here in its entirety, in which he is one of the few contemporaries to depict the atrocities and horrors of the Thirty Years' War. Of the 18 etchings, the first in the series, "Gallows Tree," in particular, has become one of the best-known depictions through its use in history and school textbooks.
Some 200 years later, Francesco de Goya revisited this theme and published his even more extensive cycle on the horrors of war, created under the impression of the Spanish Revolt of 1810-14. This cycle from the same provenance is listed under lot 615.
