HOLZER, JENNY
1950 GALLIPOLIS, OH/USA
Title: To secret 32.
Date: 2012.
Technique: Handmade paper sheet, two-layers couched, with stencil-reservage-technique.
89 x 69cm.
Notation: Signed (verso).
Publisher: Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e.V. (publisher).
Condition:
Stains as well as minimal rubbings at the right centre margin as well as minor stainings in the right corners. Otherwise in good condition.
Each verso with typographic details on the work and publisher. The artist condemns a scandal here, which became public in media reports, that American soldiers used waterboarding, the internationally prohibited torture method, during the Gulf war. For the works Jenny Holzer used the publsihed magnified original documents of the CIA, in which the torture method is documented. Holzer blackened the text blocks except for key words. The work was created in a highly laborious manner because every motif was made from two different kinds of paper by hand. Even the writing is not printed but moulded by hand. Thus each work is unique.
Literature:
- Rüggeberg, Harald (ed.): Griffelkunst - Verzeichnis der Editionen (2010-2020), vol. IV, Hamburg 2011, no. 345/346 P10.
