Coming from a humble background, Johann Jakob Meyer earned a reputation in the first decades of the 19th century as one of the most important landscape portraitists in Switzerland. His talent was discovered early on by Heinrich Füssli, with whom he was able to begin his apprenticeship and who supported him. Already known in the important royal circles of Prussia, Johann Jakob Meyer undertook an extended trip to Russia from 1842, which brought him contacts with the Tsar's court. During this trip he created numerous panels with views of the palaces and gardens of Tsar Nicholas I.
