VAN HAM Art Estate presents "Karl Hofer"

The painter and draughtsman Karl Hofer is an important artist of classical modernism, in which he occupies a special position. His work cannot be categorised as either German Expressionism or New Objectivity. His painting is characterised by a strict and simple, classically balanced composition and subtle colour modulation as well as a lyrical, melancholic expression of strong psychological expressiveness. From 1898 to 1955, Karl Hofer created around 2,900 paintings and many more works on paper. From 1905, Hofer's paintings were regularly shown at exhibitions, such as the "Berliner Secession". Works by Hofer can be found in the National Gallery in Berlin, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt and numerous American museums in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, among others.

VAN HAM is recognised as the most important contact for the work of the German painter and graphic artist due to its academic work on Karl Hofer. VAN HAM Art Estate has been looking after several partial estates of Karl Hofer since 2007. In 2008, VAN HAM Art Publications published the three-volume catalogue raisonné of Karl Hofer's paintings, compiled by Karl Bernhard Wohlert. In summer 2012, Markus Eisenbeis founded the Karl Hofer Committee as managing director of VAN HAM Art Publications and editor of the catalogue raisonné. This means that independent experts from various specialist fields will continue Karl Bernhard Wohlert's research work and expertise in order to be able to adequately answer all questions relating to Karl Hofer's works in the future. To mark the 60th anniversary of Karl Hofer's death, VAN HAM Art Publications is presenting a special insight into the artist's own work with the catalogue raisonné of his sketchbooks. Karl Hofer's written legacy has been in the German Art Archive at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg (GNM) since 1987.
