The plates in this series (see also lots 557, 558 and 559), executed in high-quality miniature painting, depict various locations in Thuringia and their landmarks with topographical accuracy. Despite slight variations in the gold ornamentation on the rim, they undoubtedly belong to the same service. No source references have been handed down regarding either the client or the occasion for which the plates were ordered. Three further plates of identical shape with views of Altenstein, Meiningen and Bad Liebenstein are in the Twinight Collection, New York. The authorship of the graphic templates for the plates is attributed to the landscape painter August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer.
