ELÍASSON, ÓLAFUR
1967 Copenhagen
Title: The gaze of Versailles.
Date: 2016.
Technique: Glass globes, partly gilded and brass brackets. In original box.
Ø 3,5 x 12cm.
Condition:
Work and box are in very good condition.
Installation instructions are enclosed in this work.
From an edition of 366 copies. The circulation number refers to the number of days in 2016.
The object was installed at eye-level and eye distance in the palace of Versailles. Through the pupil-like openings at the front, it invited the spectators to approach the "eyes" and to look deep inside. From different distances the spectators received different impressions: close to it, a tiny upside down reflection of the globes could be seen in the gilded interior. On even closer inspection, the impression of a galaxy could be perceived because the dark inner surface of the outer globe is spotted with irregular bright spots through tiny openings in the gold layer.
