LARGE CAMEO MADE OF LAYERED AGATE IN GOLD MOUNTING WITH DOUBLE PORTRAIT OF ALEXANDER AND KONSTANTIN.

Date: Dated 21st of April 1791.
Maker/Designer: Attributed to Maria Fjodorowna (1776-1828).
Technique: Glass mass in gilt mounting.
Measurement: Oval of 7x5,5cm.
Mark: On the rim inscribed MARIA F 21. APRIL 1791.

Provenance:
Private collection Rhineland-Palatinate

"Among the various arts, stone carving, that is, making intaglios and cameos from Siberian hard stone, was Maria Fyodorovna's favorite....Maria Fyodorovna knew this art form well. For her own works she preferred jasper, but also multiply layered stones,...Her mentor...was the teacher of medallic art...Karl (von) Leberecht....Maria Fyodorovna first made a wax template modelled from nature or a good portrait. After that she carried it out on the stone...".
