LARGE CHÔBA DANSU FOR A MERCHANT.
Origin: Japan.
Date: 19th - beg. 20th c.
Technique: Zelkova (keyaki), cypress (hinoki), ceder (sugi), frames lacquered black in front, fittings and handles from iron.
Description: In the one-piece chest at the top and bottom two large drawers each with lock. The middle section with eight drawers flanking a narrow enter. Three drawers each with a separate latch (bo), two more drawers with lock. In the center, a small lockable door with two small drawers and a slightly larger one behind it, one of them with lock. Secret compartment not preserved. Above and below each one small lockable drawer. The door and
the bolt are decorated with a family crest (mon) with the character for stone (ishi) and chrysanthemum flowers. The lock fittings in Paulownia (kiri) shape.
Measurement: H.136cm, w.171cm, d.59cm.
