The Longines calibre 13ZN is considered one of the most important and technically outstanding clockworks in watchmaking history. It was developed by Longines in 1936 and represented a milestone in the field of chronographs. Particularly noteworthy was the calibre's ability to feature both a flyback mechanism and precise timekeeping, which made it especially useful for aviators and military personnel.
The clockwork itself was exceptionally well thought out and compact. With a diameter of 29.80 mm (corresponding to 13 lines), it was comparatively large, but still handy enough to be used in sports and military wristwatches. The flyback mechanism made it possible to reset the chronograph hand to zero with a single press and immediately start a new time measurement without having to stop the chronograph first. This made it particularly ideal for pilots who needed quick and precise time measurements during flight.
Production of the calibre 13ZN ended in the early 1950s, but the influence and importance of this clockwork can still be felt today. It was not only a technical marvel of its time, but also laid the foundation for many later developments in the field of chronographs. Today, watches with the 13ZN mechanism are highly sought after by collectors and fetch high prices at auctions, as they represent a piece of watchmaking history.
In summary, the Longines Calibre 13ZN is not only an important chapter in the history of watchmaking, but also a symbol of the spirit of innovation and the quest for perfection that has always characterised Longines.
