The best known and most symbolic alpine plant, the Edelweiss flower can be found in several paintings by Matthäus Schiesl (including lot 13 in this ONLINE ONLY auction). The colour palette is always kept in quite earthy tones, so that the flower stands out prominently. In the different versions of the depictions of the plant, Matthäus varies small details from nature, such as a snail shell - as in the present lot - or a butterfly.
