Condition:
Irregularly applied, old varnish. Under UV light no retouching is visible. Minimally wavy paper as well as small pinhole in the painting surface above the book. Verso colour smudges, isolated (colour) stains. Overall in good, colour fresh condition.
Frame: Paint chipping at the dark part of the frame.
Also in this sheet, which probably served as a study for a larger work on wood or canvas, the small town typical for Matthew's depictions of saints as well as the green landscape with fields and forests in the background can be seen. Through this execution, the artist locates his scenes of saints, which appear many times in his work, in the local, southern German region.
