The "Peitschenhiebmuster" (whip-pattern) service was designed between 1903 and 1904 by the Belgian-Flemish architect and designer Henry van de Velde (1863-1957). The aim was to create a contemporary alternative to the traditional Meissen services that would meet the demands of modern table culture in terms of design and function. Van de Velde's formal language is a new stylistic and methodical approach to the design of porcelain tableware.
