The model for the Bolognese dog, which is said to have been August III's favourite animal, is first mentioned in February 1735. There it is included in a list of completed animal figures for the Japanese Palais. Like many of Kaendler's animal figures, the dog is characterised by its strong naturalistic expression. The wavy, moving strands of fur, the large, inquisitive eyes and especially the open mouth with carefully worked out details such as the tongue, palate and teeth, make the dog appear lifelike and almost alive .
