The creator of the decor '1001 Nights', Heinz Werner, was a member of an artists' collective that was responsible for the design of new figures, wall panel paintings and vessels in Meissen from 1960. One of the main tasks of this new department, which still exists today, was the development of coffee and table services. The aim was to use innovative means to continue Meissen's long tradition of creating design highlights of European dining culture.
The decor of 1001 nights, on the service 'Großer Ausschnitt' designed by Ludwig Zepner, is an ideal example of this approach. Similar to Johann Gregorius Höroldt's chinoiseries from the 18th century, the Oriental motifs are born from the imagination of a romanticizing European perspective. The actions on the porcelain are not staged in cartouches, but the cheerful, colourful and luxurious gold fairytale world can move freely on the curved forms of the vessels. The gold lace border, which runs along the edges of the service parts, acts like a curtain through which the viewer can follow the events.
