PORCELAIN CUIRASSIER ON HORSEBACK.
Meissen.
Date: 20th c.
Maker/Designer: Model P. Scheurich, 1936.
Technique: Porcelain, white porcelain.
Description: A galloping horse with a rider sitting on it on an oval plinth with a tree trunk as
support. The rider is in Prussian uniform with a large caterpillar helmet, sword and
raised right hand in salute. The Guards Cuirassier Regiment was a cavalry unit of the
Prussian Army, which was founded in 1815. The troop type got its name from the cuirasse
(French leather armour). Helmets and swords were worn. Alongside the figure of
'Seydlitz', the cuirassier is Scheurich's only porcelain figure with a military reference.
It reflects his ironic view of martial expression: the comical and at the same time
exaggeratedly stiff posture reflects his aversion to military themes..
Measurement: Height 47cm.
Mark: Swords mark, painted blue under glaze. On the base incised swords mark and "weiß", next to this "Scheurich". Model number A1268, embossing number 147.
Literature:
- Johannes Rafael. Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellan für die Meissener Manufaktur. Meissen 1995. (Meissener Manuskripte Sonderband VIII) p. 157, p.55, ill. 55.3.
