Alpine landscapes, female dancers in the opera and cabaret, Berlin, Venice and Paris as well as - contemporary and especially popular - the summery Munich beer gardens. These are the main themes of Otto Pippels. They are widely spread and still connected through their impressionist style of painting that underlines the vibrancy of the motifs.
Otto Pippel got to know Impressionism in Paris in 1908, after his years of study in Dresden with Gotthardt Kuehl. Deeply impressed after he returned to Germany, chose Planegg near Munich as residence, where he brought his motifs onto canvas in his studio that were highly popular all his. Often he was away travelling and documented the metropolitan life; and in contrast to this also the serene Alpine landscapes.
Thereby, his motifs always were impressionistically dissolved and worked with strong pasty paint application. Even if a distinct temporal attribution of his works carely is possible due to his style, one might assume to recognise the increasing freedom of his brush strokes and trowel application, that are characteristic of his paintings. The typically shimmering light always is characteristic that catches the mood, no matter if it is the day's sunlight or the artificial light of soirées and theatre scenes.
