Grashof painted this portrait of his parents in a summerhouse in 1832 while still a master pupil of Wilhelm von Schadow at the Düsseldorf Academy; it is considered the first work, with which the 20-year-old became famous. He painted this portrait of his mother four years after her death, in the year of his departure for South America.
