PIENE, OTTO
1928 Laasphe/Westphalia - 2014 Berlin
Title: Rastermond.
Date: 2009.
Technique: Clay with gold glaze, polychromed.
Ø 48 x 2cm.
Notation: Stamped and numbered verso: Otto Piene, 'Rastersonne', 2009, Nr. 75/99.
Number: 75/99.
Condition:
The object is in very good condition. The object on offer here has a copy number divergent to the one depicted.
In 1999 Otto Piene used one of the oldest artisanal materials for the first time - ceramics. Since 2006, he has been working with the Cologne ceramics workshop Niels Dietrich, where he has developed his most recent group of works, Raster-, Feuer- und Grubenkeramiken, which, among other things, revisits Piene's painterly gesture. The rasterised ceramic (Rasterkeramik) presented here show a clear reference to the rasterised pictures (Rasterbilder) of the early 1960s. As with the 'Feuer' pictures, the result of the ceramics is hardly predictable, since the glaze can react differently during the firing process. The glazes of gold or platinum make the ceramics glow. The relief catches the light, refracts and reflects it. As with the light ballets, the light is directed back into the room and creates an iridescent flicker.
