"For generations, retired wine barrels had been stored in the cellar of Theunissen's father-in-law in the Piedmontese mountains. The cooper had subdued the wood to his order, had stretched the staves into their shape with metal bands for decades.
Theunissen separated what had been bound together for so long in order to rearrange it. He freed the staves from the yoke, loosened them and released the pressure. He burst the barrel rings open and exposed the interior, where wine crystals and deposits in iridescent shades of red still bore witness to their purpose and fascinated Theunissen. ("Generationenlang waren ausgediente Weinfässer im Keller von Theunissens Schwiegervater in den piemontesischen Bergen gelagert worden. Der Küfer hatte das Holz seiner Ordnung unterworfen, hatte die Dauben mit Metallbändern jahrzehntelang in ihre Form gespannt.
Theunissen trennte das so lange Verbundene, um es neu zu arrangieren. Er befreite die Dauben vom Joch, lockerte sie und löste den Druck. Er sprengte die Fassringe und legte das Innere frei, in dem Weinkristalle und Ablagerungen in changierenden Rottönen noch von ihrer Bestimmung zeugten und Theunissen faszinierten. Dann schraubte er alles zu neuen Gebinden")
