SCHIESTL, RUDOLF
1878 Würzburg - 1931 Nuremberg
Title: Studie zu dem Bildnis des Vaters Matthäus Schiestl.
Technique: Charcoal and chalk, heightened with white on card.
Measurement: 50 x
46cm. Notation: Inscribed lower left: Kohle-Studie Matthäus Schiestl.
Frame/Pedestal: Framed behind glass.
Estate stamp of the artist lower right.
Condition:
Sheet lightly spotted and light-stained, numerous puncture holes from drawing board pins scattered over the entire sheet. Below the mouth a milky stripe running horizontally over the entire sheet. Adhesive residues at the lower left edge of the sheet. Residues of adhesive tape running around the edges on verso.
Frame: Minimal restored paint chipping at upper left, otherwise in overall good condition.
The present sheet is a study for the 1914 oil painting on wood "Portrait des Vaters des Künstlers, des Bildhauers Matthäus Schiestl d.Ä." (Fine Art Auction on 2 June 2021, lot 1167) and shows the father of the two artist brothers Rudolf and Matthäus in a half-portrait and with a dignified look.
Both Rudolf and Matthäus learned the fundamental artistic skills in their father's workshop in Würzburg and studied medieval sculpture in particular as part of their training. Sketching those and the Franconian surroundings was also part of the curriculum. After their father's training, both artist brothers went to art academies and turned more to painting and graphic art. However, the sculptural influence of their father is still recognisable in both of their work.
