British artist Simon Patterson studied at Hertfordshire College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths College. In 1996 he was nominated for the renowned Turner Prize, where he exhibited his most famous work: "The Great Bear", which is presented here.
The lithograph shows a fictitious map of the London Underground. Patterson uses the original design created by H. C. Beck in 1931 – in addition to the layout itself, he also uses the same size and the standard aluminum frame – but changes the station names. Each underground line is assigned to a specific group: engineers, French kings (Louis), philosophers, explorers, planets, journalists, footballers, musicians, film actors, saints, Italian artists, sinologues and comedians. The title of the work, on the other hand, refers to the star constellation and thus to the act of thinking while looking at the night sky. In a similar way, we hang on to our thoughts when we ride the underground alone. In "The Great Bear", the artist humorously and subtly combines the daily physical movements through space and time with the spiritual ones. And just like stars in the firmament link up to form images, the map of our daily stations becomes a network of stars – of our heroes of high and pop culture.
One copy of this edition belongs to the collection of Charles Saatchi and was shown in the infamous "Sensation" exhibition in 1997. Another copy is in the collection of London's Tate Gallery.
