Around the mid-18th century, representations of beggars were extremely popular and were crafted in a wide variety of precious materials. Figures combining carved wood and ivory were masterpieces and testified to artistic skill. The main representative of this genre was the Munich carver Simon Troger, who usually produced entire groups of figurines. Besides him, other artists are known in southern Germany, most of them Troger's pupils. In the German Ivory Museum in Erbach, on loan from the Bavarian National Museum, there is a very similar beggar figurine by Veit Grauppensberg.
