Thomas Ruff graduated form the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. First his areas of interest were conceptional photography of interior, later he deals with portrait photography. But the conceptual component remains a dominat component in Ruffs oeuvre.
Thomas Ruff's series "Substrat" searches for new boundries within photography. Without camera, negatives or darkroom the arist narrows down the classical concept of photography. Foundantion for his series are japanese mana- and anime-fragments from the internet. Then he rewises these illustations to a dregree where they lose every figurative element and are reduced to their colour substance. After this, the new creation happens by letting photographic paper run trough a mechanic printer. This recreation does not just recieve th coloured essence of the original image. Also the photography is reduced to abstract gestures and is thus newly investigated. This way Ruff directs the viewer's attenion towards the real characteristics of photography
